The Many Advantages of the Da Vinci Hysterectomy

About 600,000 hysterectomies are performed in the United States each year, making it one of the most common surgeries.

About 600,000 hysterectomies are performed in the United States each year, making it one of the most common surgeries. However common, you may still feel nervous about undergoing the procedure. This is perfectly normal.

There are various techniques that can be used to perform a hysterectomy. The most well-known technique is an open surgery, where your surgeon makes an incision and removes your uterus. Another technique, called laparoscopic hysterectomy, involves a smaller incisions, and the use of a very thin scope with a light and camera.

The method that Dr. Neyman prefers is a robotic-assisted, laparoscopic hysterectomy. She uses the da Vinci System, which is a robotic-assisted surgical device that allows for precision, control, and better vision during the procedure. Here are a few of the advantages of a da Vinci Hysterectomy.

It’s minimally invasive

The incisions necessary when you have a da Vinci hysterectomy are far smaller than for an open surgery, but are also even smaller than with a traditional laparoscopic hysterectomy.  Smaller incisions are better for many reasons, including less risk of infection, quicker healing, and many others.

Lower risk of complications

Any surgery carries the risk of complications. In fact, even a needle stick involves some risk. However, studies have shown that your risk of complications is lower with a da Vinci hysterectomy than with either traditional open surgery or with traditional laparoscopic surgery.

Less blood loss

A da Vinci hysterectomy means you’ll have a lower risk of needing a blood transfusion and you’ll likely lose less blood during the surgery. Losing less blood means that you’ll heal faster.

Shorter hospital stay

All of the other advantages to having a da Vinci hysterectomy added together result in a shorter hospital stay. Being able to go home sooner means that you’ll be more comfortable and incur fewer costs.

You may even be able to go home on the same day, which is unheard of with other hysterectomy methods.

Faster overall recovery

A smaller incision means less muscle tissue is damaged, so it heals more quickly. Less blood loss means that your body’s natural healing response can work more efficiently. All of these factors together add up to a faster overall recovery time with a da Vinci hysterectomy than with other types.

You’ll most likely be back to a normal diet and regular activities within about two weeks.

Treatment tailored to you

Dr. Neyman provides personalized care. Whether or not she recommends you have a da Vinci hysterectomy depends on your situation. Not every patient is a candidate for robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery.

For example, your condition must be benign — noncancerous — in order for you to have a da Vinci hysterectomy. The reason Dr. Neyman recommends a hysterectomy is important when it comes to the most appropriate method.

If you’d like to learn more about the da Vinci system, and why it may be the best method for your hysterectomy, book an appointment with Dr. Neyman online or by phone today. She’s a founding member of the Texas Institute of Robotic Surgery and has performed hundreds of hysterectomies.
